Bleach: Shattered Blade—White But Not Bright

Beware anime fans. Bleach: Shattered Blade looks terrific but plays far too simply for you to have any lasting fun. The three worlds of Bleach are complex and visually busy while the story line is so simple-minded that the two elements seem torn from different games. Attacks involve simple remote waggling that grows tiresome after a quick learning curve is mounted. Characters fight in such a similar manner that they are virtually interchangeable. That there are a staggering number of characters only speaks to an attempt at complexity that doesn’t pan out.The game displays rounds of rochambeau that also are markedly lame in that they seem to have no place in the continuity of the simple story line. Filling up your bankai meter can be entertaining but then you can lose the whole thing through seemingly chance fights against supercharged opponents. When in multiplayer mode, there is a certain amount of pleasure but again the battles are so simple that you grow weary rapidly and hope for something different. Back and forth movements are pretty much what you are limited to so that again you are looking for a diversion rather quickly. Thankfully, most battles are short so the annoyance factor is limited to a few seconds.Cut scenes play so simply (or so inanimately) that they should be characterized as cut stills with monotone voice-overs. Dialogue sounds like it has been translated from the Japanese without any concern for conventions of modern English. Stilted is a not quite adequate term. Perhaps reading an instruction manual taken from another language is representative of its reading level.Bleach: Shattered Blade should be considered a good first attempt at Wii but even then it falls short.
